How to Apply Yoga Principles in Daily Life

 

Attending yoga classes regularly teaches you a great deal about the benefits of yoga. You will certainly reap benefits, such as learning new breathing practices, mindfulness strategies, toning, promoting physical balance, and overall mind body connection.

 

However, there are ways you can also incorporate yoga principles out of the classroom in your daily routine that further promotes your quality of life. Yoga promotes balance in your daily life through staying rested and maintaining daily structure and routine.

 

Build Your Sense of Balance

Sometimes it takes a while during yoga classes to improve your balance when holding poses. Similar to literal balance, the ability to effectively multitask in everyday life while staying on both feet is an important life skill.

Don’t let yourself be thrown off your own path and direction. Learning how to listen to yourself and say ‘no’ when something does not sound right to your mind and body helps you avoid too much stress and overcommitment.

You must ask yourself whether you have the emotional, physical, and mental capacity to take on yet another task or responsibility. If you take too much on, then eventually everything can come crashing down at once. Life can be a push and pull between what you have to do, what you want to do, and what  you think you should be doing.

Use the mindfulness techniques you learn in yoga, like breathing, to maintain your core awareness, so you know when something is too much and is throwing you out of balance.

 

Stay well rested

There’s nothing like Savasana at the end of a yoga class to remind you how rest is valuable and powerful. You have a long-term relationship with your sleep, and sometimes repair work for the relationship is needed.

As part of the mind-body connection forged in yoga, set aside time at night for a wind down routine and consider some yoga stretches to incorporate into this routine. Invest in a nighttime routine in order to achieve quality sleep that benefits your body and your mind.

Appreciating rest as a time to invest in your overall wellbeing is essential - you don’t want to lose energy, focus, and productivity in your daily life as a result. Use yoga and meditation as a natural remedy to sleep to help your mood and strengthen your body’s resilience to daily stressors.

 

Establish and Maintain a Routine

Just like in yoga, comfort exists in a firm routine, leading to better health and happiness, leading you to eat, exercise, and sleep better. Just as yoga requires routine practice and self-discipline, you can use these same principles as a basis for your daily protocol, and you can use a routine to help you remain well-grounded in daily life.

Your routine does not have to be rigid, however. Allow for spontaneity through adopting yoga mindfulness skills, so you know when it is right for you to deviate based on your relationship with yourself. Be kind to yourself as you are adopting a new routine, because it probably won’t happen overnight.

 

Yoga is not only a form of exercise - it is a way of life and a way of experiencing the world around you.

Applying these yoga principles to your daily life is an excellent way of seamlessly blending what you learn in the yoga classroom with your daily realities, in such a way that adds harmony to your life.
