Easy Ways to Work Meaningful Self-Care Activities Into Your Daily Routine

Burnout isn’t just something that happens to other people. It’s a genuine state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by unrelenting stress. Failing to take burnout seriously undermines your ability to keep up with the demands of a busy family and professional life. At worst, it can damage a career for which you’ve worked hard and may require intensive medical treatment or psychological therapy. Practicing self-care helps fend off depression, anxiety and substance abuse - common manifestations of burnout. Best of all, self-care can easily be worked into your daily routine.


Help others

Helping others is an excellent way to alleviate stress. It feels good and takes your mind off your problems. It could be as simple as buying a cup of coffee for a stranger, or something more involved, such as volunteering for a charitable activity. Make a habit of helping someone every day. Offer to buy lunch for your secretary or for a coworker who’s having a rough day. Altruistic behavior, even in its simplest form, is personally rewarding and proof that small gestures can have a positive impact on the world around you.   


Exercise regularly

Exercise is an excellent form of self-care, but making it to the gym everyday and paying for the cost of a gym membership may become too much of a hurdle. No problem: transforming a corner of your home into a workout space can make it more convenient to exercise on a daily basis. You can easily find inexpensive equipment like weights, resistance bands and Swiss balls, none of which take up much space. If you’re not sure how to begin, consider on-demand workouts that you can follow using a streaming device. Media streamers are considerably less expensive than a gym membership and allow you to work out at home any time of day. If you don’t already have one, learn about the different options and be sure to purchase one that’s affordable and easily integrates with your television. 

Yoga is another form of self-care that can be practiced in the studio or at home with the help of instructional videos you can stream from a variety of sources. Yoga is a mindful mental-physical discipline that doctors often prescribe to patients with high blood pressure. If you’re new to it, start with beginner-level poses, take it slow, and be sure to stretch out before you start. 


Work in a walk

Walking is one of the simplest of activities, a solitary form of exercise that’s ideal for processing thoughts and putting your problems into context. A vigorous walk gets the blood flowing and forces fresh air into your lungs. It also activates endorphins, feel-good chemicals in the brain that instill optimism and self-confidence. You don’t have to take a five-mile hike: a couple of brisk laps at the local park will do the trick. It only takes 30 minutes or less to work this simple, yet effective form of self-care into your daily routine.


Don’t cheat yourself of sleep

Experts recommend that everyone get 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Sleep leaves you feeling invigorated, mentally sharp, and able to overcome the small frustrations that can wear you down. Set a regular bedtime and stick with it, even on weekends and vacation. Shut off your mobile devices, laptop and other electronics an hour or so before bed so you can get to sleep without distractions. A full night’s sleep means you’ll be able to function during the day without fatigue or losing patience and concentration, which often happens when you’re sleep deprived.  


The consequences of ignoring self-care can be serious - burnout is a very real and dangerous mental and physical affliction. It’s important to understand that self-care doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming (a common misconception); quite the contrary, self-care can be done with simple activities that take an hour or less each day. The key is to make time to meet your mental, physical and emotional needs every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
